Nigella Seed Pods

Nigella Sativa seed pods have a wonderful 'space ship' shape, developing firstly in green to purple, then drying to a beige-brown bumper surfaced husk. When the top opens with slits, the black seeds can be seen inside and rattle on shacking. They remain intact throughout the winter, only disbursing when the the pod breaks down, or if blown about in strong winds. These can be harvested for culinary and health purposes. A dual use for a beautiful flower which comes in white and blue, double or single petalled.
